This collection begins with my earliest works after exiting a more "mainstream" style of writing. After a few years of composing/producing in a number of different genres, and without any satisfaction or reasonable personal success, I found that in the edges of obscurity is where I wanted to operate. The first piece, 'Guitar Cords', was a graphic score (now lost), was for two hard panned guitar cables that were played to cause ground hum; my first step into organizing the obscurity. This started a path of exploring different mechanisms of organization, which later lead into writing for instruments, and ultimately combining the worlds of acoustic and electronic sound. The last piece in this collection, 'String Quartet No. 1', is what I see as the culmination of my graduate studies at Mills College, written as my thesis work, and being the one that ended a period of minimal improvisation in my instrumental scores.
